Dr. Sarwar Zahid

Dr. Sarwar Zahid attended the University of Michigan Medical School, where he fell in love with ophthalmology. After one year of research at the Kellogg Eye Center, he knew that the subspecialty of retina was his true passion. During this time, Dr. Zahid performed clinical research and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as a textbook highlighting retinal genetic diseases.

He returned to New York University for Ophthalmology Residency, working at Bellevue Hospital and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. He returned to the Midwest to complete his Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he trained to perform complex retinal surgeries under the guidance of world-class retina specialists.

After two years in practice in Chicago, he returned to New York City to serve his community and be closer to his family. As one of only two Bangladeshi retina specialists in the country and an immigrant himself, Dr. Zahid values serving the immigrant community. He is fluent in Bangla and Spanish, and conversational in Hindi and Urdu.

Dr. Zahid has a particular interest in the medical and surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy, complex retinal detachments, and secondary intraocular lens surgery.

In his spare time, Dr. Zahid enjoys running, traveling the world, singing, dancing, and DJing. He often DJs at medical conferences and is known in the community as “DJ Schisis”. He is also a foodie that loves the amazing variety of cuisines available in New York.

Dr. Zahid is an avid sports fan and enjoys playing and watching soccer, football, baseball, and basketball. His teams include the Michigan Wolverines, New York Yankees/Mets, Knicks, NYCFC, Real Madrid, and Arsenal.

He is currently affiliated with the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. Dr. Zahid is board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
